Very nice paper introducing a host of geospatial topics that can be difficult to self-teach. I especially like how it clearly defines geospatial vocabulary, and explains the topics very well (CRC for example). It might be nice to add a couple of common projection for the US or other non-Europe areas to Table 1. 

The ggplot2 code is great and nicely shows examples of different topics. 

Overall, I think the paper is clear and well written. The following comments could be optionally considered if the authors wanted to add additional useful topics (and space allowed).

One topic that is not included yet sometimes needed is to combine different projections on the same map. This might be done for putting a small inset map in a corner. Or, in the US for example, we might need to include Alaska (AK) and Hawaii (HI) together with the other 48 states, and want to re-scale, rotate, and translate AK/HI individually. 

It might be nice to expand the 3rd paragraph in the Introduction that introduces the other mapping options in R. If a package was known for a particular feature (leaflet for interactive maps for instance), that could be added.
