Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the last couple of years, with the development of innovative technologies and an increased drive for sustainability, stem cells-based applications have widened to now include alternative foods and leather products alongside biotherapeutics. However, and regardless of the application, there is a need to ensure that reliable and cost-effective bioprocesses are in place for manufacturing the stem cells and their products (e.g., extracellular vesicles, differentiated cells etc). This interdisciplinary research is complex as it sits at the intersection between engineering and life sciences, and as such, it requires knowledge and expertise from both disciplines.

This Special Issue of Bioengineering focusing on Stem Cell Bioprocessing aims to showcase the latest research in the form of original papers and comprehensive reviews on new approaches to manufacturing stem cells to tackle the existing challenges of scale-up, reproducibility and cost-effectiveness, as well as innovations in bioprocessing tools for stem cell production (e.g., microcarriers, sensors, machine learning models etc). It is intended to be a collection of content that covers stem cell manufacturing from laboratory to industrial scale, including scale up or scale out systems, as well as representative scale down models for process development.

Topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Stem cell bioprocesses for cultivated meat production
  • Stem cell bioprocesses for cultivated leather production
  • Stem cell bioprocesses for production of extracellular vesicles
  • Stem cell bioprocesses for biotherapeutics
  • Novel microcarriers (g. biodegradable, edible, dissolvable, liquid, temporary, stimuli responsive etc)
  • Bioprocesses for stem cell differentiation
  • Scale up / scale out / scale down models for stem cell bioprocessing
  • Strategies for achieving cost effectiveness in stem cell bioprocesses
  • Cost of goods analysis of stem cell bioprocesses
  • Life cycle analysis of stem cell bioprocesses
  • Application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in bioprocessing of stem cells
  • Reviews of the current advances and challenges in stem cell bioprocessing for specific applications

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
