Research on Steel and Steel–Concrete Composite Structures Under Seismic Loading Conditions

Dear Colleagues,

Steel special moment-resisting frames (SMRFs), believed to be capable of dependable and ductile response during strong earthquake shaking, have long been considered a premier lateral force-resisting system. As SMRFs provided large unobstructed spaces, this type of framing system was very popular in high seismic regions of the United States. In composite structures, different materials are expected to be arranged in an optimal geometric configuration in order to exploit the higher strength and stiffness of each material. Therefore, the composite structure became widespread worldwide, particularly in high-rise buildings and long-span structures.

Unfortunately, brittle fracture in or around the groove welds between the beam flanges (primarily beam the bottom flange) and the column was observed in more than 150 steel SMRF buildings after the January 17, 1994 Northridge earthquake. Since then, many studies have been undertaken to investigate the behavior of the moment connection, and numerous tests have been carried out to find approaches to improve their ductility under seismic loads.
